OVERVIEW
Armenia is mountainous country located in the South Caucasus region of Eurasia and situated at the intersection of Eastern Europe and Western Asia. It is bordered by Turkey to the west, Iran to the south, Artsakh and Azerbaijan to the east, and Georgia to the north. Armenia is composed of 11 regions, including Yerevan.
The Republic of Armenia is a sovereign democratic and social state governed by the rule of law with population of more than 3 million people, a million of which live in the vibrant capital of Yerevan. It is a safe and hospitable country sustained by closely-knit family ties.
The country has a visa-free regime for citizens of 51 countries (including the US, the EU and the former Soviet Union).
Armenia was the first country to adopt Christianity as a state religion in 301 AD. The UNESCO World Heritage List includes 9 monuments located in the country, among them are Echmiadzin Cathedral and Haghpat, Sanahin and Geghard monasteries. Tourists have the unique opportunity to see Tatev monastery (9th century) where they can take a breathtaking tour on the Wings of Tatev cableway, the longest non-stop double-track cableway in the world, which is listed in Guinness World Records book. It runs for 5,752 meters, and reaches a maximum height of 320 meters.
Armenia is one of the safest countries in the world. According to numerous international reports, including one by the US Bureau of Diplomatic Security, the crime rate here is very low.
YEREVAN
Yerevan (founded as Erebuni) is the 12th capital of Armenia. The city was founded in 782 BC by the ruler of Kingdom of Ararat (Urartu), Argishti I. Yerevan’s modern image has been mostly shaped by the architect Alexander Tamanyan, who created the general plan of the city in 1924.
When the weather is good, a majestic view of Ararat, the highest mountain in the region at 5,137 m, is visible from almost any spot in Yerevan. According to the Bible, this is the place where Noah’s Ark hit land.
DILIJAN
Dilijan is a town in the Tavush Province of Armenia. Usually called Armenian Switzerland or Little Switzerland by the locals, it is one of the most important resorts of Armenia, situated within the Dilijan National Park. The forested and reclusive town is home to numerous Armenian artists, composers, and filmmakers and features some traditional Armenian architecture.
