Founder of Safari Doctors Umra Omar is a Kenyan humanitarian and community conservation strategist. After starting a career in Washington, D.C., Omar returned to her native country and during a visit to her childhood community on the islands of the Kenya-Somalia border, she learned about a medical aid project that had been abandoned because of the security concerns.
That’s when Omar founded Safari Doctors, an initiative that provides free basic (and potentially lifesaving) medical services, youth community health trainings and civic engagement in Kenya. Each month, the team sets sail in a boat loaded with medicines and conducts mobile clinics across dozens of villages. Together with regular outreach work, the team reaches over a thousand patients a month.
In 2016, Omar was named a Top 10 CNN Hero, and in 2017, she was named the UN in Kenya Person of the Year. Umra Omar is currently serving as an Aurora Forum Goodwill Ambassador and is amongst the cohort of global leaders under 40 of the World Economic Forum Young Global Leaders Initiative.
