Josephine Kulea

Dr. Josephine Kulea founded the Samburu Girls Foundation (SGF) in 2011 as a non-governmental organization dedicated to rescuing at-risk girls in Kenya. Driven by a deep sense of justice, she refused to stand by while young girls were subjected to rape, abuse, and mutilation, or, in cases of pregnancy, forced to kill their own children. Her mission began with rescuing her own cousin, who had been married off to a man nearly her father's age. Before long, Dr. Kulea’s home became a refuge for over 20 young girls, all of whom she supported with her nurse’s salary. Realizing she could not do it alone, she reached out to friends, her church, and other community members who often provided support in secret.

What started in her small village quickly expanded to cover four counties in Kenya. Her remarkable work has earned her numerous awards and recognition, including praise from President Barack Obama during his visit to Kenya.

Dr. Josephine Kulea serves on the Advisory Board of VOICE, an innovative grant facility based in the Netherlands. Her dream is to see the eradication of harmful cultural practices for a prosperous Kenya and Africa as a whole.
