Dr. Deqo Aden Mohamed is a Somalia-born obstetrician-gynecologist and former CEO of the Dr. Hawa Abdi Foundation based in Hope Village, a complex in outside Mogadishu, Somalia. Dr. Hawa Abdi Foundation is providing healthcare, education and shelter to thousands of displaced Somalis stricken by war and famine. The village was founded by Mohamed’s mother Dr. Hawa Abdi.
Deqo Mohamed earned an MD in Moscow continually traveling back to Somalia to serve internally displaced people. She gained extensive experience working in health care in the USA. Dr. Deqo Aden Mohamed worked with Doctors Without Borders from 2008 to 2010 in Somalia during the measles outbreak in the country. She led the team for vaccination over 14,000 children under 5.
She leaded all operations in the Hawa Abdi Village in Lower Shabelle, while ensuring the safety of the 300 families who have found permanent shelter in the community. She leads the 400-bed Dr. Hawa Abdi General Hospital, Primary School, a women’s education center, and a smart farming agriculture project from 2007 to 2019.
Today, she works full time on the ground in Somalia and leads nationwide project for maternal health at Hagarla Health Centers. Dr. Mohamed is the founder of Hagarla Institute for capacity building, medical research and data collection and co-founder of Somali Cancer Society. Dr. Mohamed is Yale World Fellow, 2016 and Honorary at Chatham University 2017.
