Doctors Armine Barkhudaryan, Hayk Hovhannisyan and Gevorg Voskanyan arrived in Armenia from Sudan on June 10, 2017. For over one month they have substituted Dr. Tom Catena, 2017 Aurora Prize Laureate and the only surgeon in Nuba mountains.
On June 12 the doctors met with the journalists and the public to tell about their experience in Sudan, the situation there and the need of humanitarian aid.
“It was difficult to see those people - insecure, hungry and with an uncertain future but they were so humble, honest and kind,” said Lieutenant Colonel Gevorg Voskanyan, chief surgeon at the Central Clinical Military Hospital of Armenia.
“I am very happy that we are able today to somehow support these people. We need to think of it more and to develop the ways to assist them,” observed gynecologist Armine Barkhudaryan who delivered a few dozen of babies while serving at the “Mother of Mercy” hospital in Nuba.
Despite the lack of elementary medicines and equipment the Armenian doctors could successfully and safely perform their mission. They are ready to continue their humanitarian work.
“This kind of missions have no end. They do start but they need to be continuous. As a doctor and as an individual we are all set to continue this work,” said Major Hayk Hovhannisyan, Deputy Chief of the Surgery Unit at the Central Clinical Military Hospital of Armenia’s Defense Ministry.
