Better Lives Now: Leveraging Refugees’ Talents will take place in New York on September 20, 2018. RefugePoint and the Women’s Refugee Commission are organizing this side-event to the UN General Assembly in cooperation with the Aurora Humanitarian Initiative to launch the Refugee Self-Reliance Initiative.

Better Lives Now: Leveraging Refugees’ Talents will bring together government officials (including from both refugee hosting and donor countries), noted philanthropists, key business leaders, UN officials, and senior NGO representatives. Speakers will include: Noubar Afeyan, Founder and CEO, Flagship Pioneering; Kim Campbell, Former Prime Minister of Canada, member of WLA-Club de Madrid; Vartan Gregorian, President, Carnegie Corporation New York; Robert Hakiza, Co-Founder, YARID; Kellie Leeson, Lead Consultant, Refugee Self-Reliance Initiative; Per Heggenes, CEO, IKEA Foundation; Maria Stavropoulou, Deputy Director UNHCR Liaison Office, New York. Heba Aly, Director, IRIN News, will moderate the discussion.

This event will address what can the private sector, host and donor governments, refugee self-help groups and the aid community can do to help refugees participate economically and socially in their host countries and live #BetterLivesNow.
