Noubar Afeyan: Reflections of Legacy, and the Multitudes, of Vartan Gregorian

Members of the Aurora community, including Co-Founders of the Aurora Humanitarian Initiative, the Aurora Prize Selection Committee Chair and several members, and Aurora Laureates, attended the memorial service dedicated to the transformational life of the late Dr. Gregorian, 12th President of Carnegie Corporation of New York, Co-Founder of the Aurora Humanitarian Initiative, and Aurora Prize Selection Committee Member. The event, organized by the family of Vartan Gregorian and the Carnegie Corporation of New York, was held on April 13, 2022, at the Carnegie Hall in New York City.

“When Vartan spoke of the Aurora Initiative, he often recited a quote from Bertolt Brecht’s Galileo saying: “cursed the land that needs heroes”. He reminded us that we should all work to ensure a world in which we would not need them. But he also knew that human nature often created conflict and inequities that could be best countered by knowledge and active philanthropy,” noted Noubar Afeyan, Co-Founder of the Aurora Humanitarian Initiative, Founder and CEO of Flagship Pioneering, and Co-Founder and Chair of Moderna, while speaking at the memorial service.
