The Aurora Humanitarian Initiative, in collaboration with The Promise Institute for Human Rights at UCLA Law, invites you to the special Aurora Dialogues discussion titled “Advancing Human Rights Amid Global Refugee Crisis” and a documentary screening of the Marguerite’s Fearless Journey, which will take place on December 7 in Los Angeles.
The discussion will explore innovative approaches to advancing human rights in the context of global migration and displacement. Speakers will highlight how diverse organizations and voices can effectively address the challenges faced by displaced populations. Key topics will include the role of civil society, community-led initiatives, and the transformative power of storytelling and media in upholding human rights. The panel will also examine strategies to empower communities during crises and underscore the importance of collaborative, cross-sectoral efforts for sustainable impact.
Following the discussion, there will be a special screening of a documentary about the 2016 Aurora Prize Laureate Marguerite Barankitse, who, after witnessing the execution of 72 friends and colleagues, embarked on an extraordinary mission in Burundi. Driven by an unwavering determination to shield her people from the ravages of conflict, incessant wars, and corrupt governance, Marguerite strives to create a new generation capable of fostering a peaceful and just society. Despite having rescued over 30,000 children, she finds herself perilously placed on the death list of the Burundian government. The question remains: Can Marguerite successfully realize her vision, or will the ruthless regime kill her or silence her courageous pursuit for a better future?
Attendees will gain valuable insights into the complexities of international migration, the intersection of migration and human rights, and the impactful work being done worldwide to support displaced populations and advocate for their rights. The inclusion of Marguerite’s story will provide a poignant example of how grassroots efforts, resilience, and advocacy can make a significant difference in upholding human rights during times of crisis.
