Call for Research Proposals: FLACSO Argentina - Aurora

The Aurora Humanitarian Initiative is pleased to support FLACSO Argentina in its call for research proposals on the topic: Social Movements and the Praxis of Gratitude. Grants will be offered to three researchers whose proposal for social and humanistic research are selected for support.

The call is for research proposals that explore the manifestation of the social value of gratitude in the collective actions of social movements in specific cultural, political and economic contexts. FLACSO, with Aurora’s support, seeks proposals that qualitatively contribute to a conceptual and empirical reflection on gratitude as a motivation for action.

“The Aurora Humanitarian Initiative is pleased to collaborate with FLACSO Argentina for the purpose of encouraging academic exploration of gratitude as a motivation for action in social movements, especially in Latin America. Both institutions are interested in sponsoring and strengthening studies that consider the concept of ‘gratitude in action’ as a notion that extends the political definition of many social movements that work from an ethic of reciprocity, evoking a moral commitment in the defense of human, civil and economic rights,” said Luis Alberto Quevedo, Director of FLACSO Argentina.

The contest is open to all professionals in the field of social sciences and humanities. The research proposals can be submitted between December 11, 2017 and March 16, 2018.

“Gratitude in Action is the concept that drives the Aurora Humanitarian Initiative. The countless survivors around the world who owe their chance at life to the generosity of others can best acknowledge such benevolence by taking similar action. That is at the basis of the Aurora concept, which was established on behalf of the survivors of the Armenian Genocide and in gratitude to their saviors. We believe we would benefit from research on this concept to both explain and inspire,” said Arman Jilavian, CEO of the Aurora Humanitarian Initiative.

Selection will be made by a committee of academics.  Each proposal will be supported with US $3,000. The research must be carried out within 5 months, between April 16 and August 17, 2018. Additionally, the selected projects and the thesis will be presented publicly, twice. The first presentation of the research project will be held in Buenos Aires, Argentina, on April 24, 2018 during a panel of the Seminar on Social Movements and Praxis of Gratitude, and the thesis of the research will be presented at the Aurora 2018 Dialogues, to be held in Armenia between June 8 and 10, 2018.
