Innovation in Healthcare

The lecture by Lord Ara Darzi took place on June 8, 2018 at the Yerevan State Medical University in Armenia. Professor Darzi is Director of the Institute of Global Health Innovation at Imperial College London and Aurora Prize Selection Committee member.

In 2002, Ara Darzi was knighted for his services in medicine and surgery, and was introduced to the United Kingdom’s House of Lords as Professor the Lord Darzi of Denham in 2007. He has been a member of the Privy Council since June 2009 and was awarded the Order of Merit in January 2016.

Lord Darzi talked to the medical students about innovation in healthcare, introduced some of the latest technologies in the field and assured the young professionals that progress didn’t mean they would be out of job any time soon. “There’s this whole fear out there that automation and AI is going to make people unemployed in the workforce – healthcare is not like the banking sector,” he said.

Lord Darzi also mentioned the difficult task of selecting the Aurora Prize Laureate among so many deserving candidates. At the end of the event, the surgeon was awarded an honorary doctorate degree from the Yerevan State Medical University.
